Taking Joy in Recovery

Anyone who’s been in recovery or works in that field knows that you have to find joy wherever you can.

So much of the struggle with addiction is lacking a sense of self-worth. You feel alone. You may be justice-involved. There is potential separation from family, physically and/or emotionally. In short, it can be hard to smile.

At Mockingbird Hill Recovery Center, we embrace the power of joy.

It’s in the little things, like celebrating the seasons with hope and gratitude. Recently, Chef James Bryant and his team decided they wanted to have a Thanksgiving feast – not just for the residents and staff, but to invite all of the Aspire Indiana Health administrative staff, too.

It was the residents’ chance to play host, to give back and say thanks. Their warm fellowship was appreciated by dozens of guests. (Not to mention chef’s always-amazing food!)

The Christmas and other holiday decorations are up now at the center, which the residents had a hand in putting up. It can be the hardest time of the year to be living in a recovery center, acknowledging your substance use disorder and making the commitment to long-term recovery.

We should honor their bravery and sacrifice by resolving to spread the joy year-round.
